S-Corporation Industry Statistics
Our S-corporation-based data tables display the results of active S-Corporations (always 35 employees or less) reporting net income unless otherwise noted. Including non-profitable firms alters the comparison to healthy businesses, which we believe is the benchmark objective of most readers. Excluding loss corporations also reduces the potential distortion attributable to annual corporate failures and other turnover.
Unlike (mainly larger) C-corporations, S-corporation net income is directly taxable to owners, and is often subject to extensive end-of-year distribution in order to Òzero-outÓ the profit margin. This tends to result in depressed S-corporation net income margins, which should be considered in conjunction with Officer Compensation in order to develop a more complete profit scenario.
